DR DESHIELDS HEALTH PHILOSOPHY
Body Balance
Dr DeShields looks at your body balance in two ways. The first thing he looks at is the upper part of the neck, or the upper cervical region. The upper cervical region consists of the occiput (the back of the head), the atlas bone (C1) and axis bone (C2.) The area is a key to body balance and health because our heads weight about what a bowling ball does. If there is a misalignment of of one of the top two bones, the head will be shifted off center, and the rest of the spinal column will react to this imbalance. Dr Brian’s priority is making sure this area is in proper alignment so the rest of the spine can be better balanced. This body balance translates down the spine, then to all corresponding muscle groups, to the hips and all the way to the feet.
Posture is also a key component of body balance. Our posture, because of our technology and our work lives, tend to lead to posture imbalances. Whether it is a person who sits a desk all day or a teenager who is on their smartphone for long periods of time, you can envision the hunched over position of their head and shoulders. These postural habits lead to pain and inflammation over time. Dr DeShields helps patients take a closer look at posture, gives corrective exercises and suggests ergonomic solutions.
nutrition
One aspect of health that is starting to be talked about more, but is still overlooked is the food that we eat. Our food can either help us on our health journey or lead us down a path of destruction. Energy, our digestive processes, our detoxing mechanisms and our immune systems are all effected by the food we ingest and how our body reacts to it. Dr DeShields sees lot of issues inflammation stemming from food and gives dietary suggestions and also incorporates food sensitivity testing to help removes these barriers to health. Are you eating healthy?
movement
Our body is made to move. The musculoskeletal system is muscles, ligaments and tendons that are attached across joints to enable our body’s to move. Our society has become very sedentary as a whole. Dr Brian is passionate about getting patients to move more, whether it is getting out of a chair and walking around the house more, going for more walks, or starting a new exercise program. Movement or the lack thereof can effect mood, digestion, detoxification. How much are you moving on a daily basis?
